The Aachen Skillslab "AIXTRA"

In this talk the different steps of planning, further development and establishment of an interdisciplinary faculty-wide skillslab facility will be described. In addition, another focus of this presentation will lie on how such an institution – based on the experiences in Aachen – offers potential effects for educational research within such a teaching side.

Diversity & Transcultural Teaching

In the context of world wide migration European countries have become more diverse on several levels, including ethnic origin, legal status, socio economic situation, religious beliefs and cultural background. The increasing diversity of patient populations poses new challenges for our health care system and hospitals, as the present health services are not sufficiently prepared to accomodate this social, ethnic and cultural diversity.

Disability in Clinical Practice
In order to respond to a growing diversity among students and patients, medical education needs to include information about disability and disadvantage. The workshop provides insight into integrating disability into the Viennese curriculum and what lecturers can do to make a difference. Another topic is the needs of patients with disabilities. Strategies and methods are presented and discussed.

Martin Fischer

Biography
Dr. Fischer is a general internist and endocrinologist. Since August 2011 he is full professor for Medical Education at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Open-Access Journal Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ausbildung (ZMA), a reviewer for numerous journals and institutions and the president of the German Association for Medical Education (GMA). From 2008 until 2011 he worked as Dean for Education, and Director of the Institute for Teaching and Educational Research in Health Sciences at the Faculty of Health of Witten/Herdecke University, Germany. Dr. Fischer received his education in Hamburg and Freiburg, Germany, with the doctor’s degree in medicine (MD) awarded at the University of Freiburg. He received his Master of Medical Education (MME) degree at the University of Berne, Switzerland, and is also certified in medical informatics.
